In terms of putting together successful shows, Ryan Murphy certainly knows what he is doing. Since he is the brilliant mind behind Glee, American Horror Story, and Nip-Tuck, he should know what he is doing. His sensationalist series, however, often cost more than any other drama on the network.
Murphy's series also has a kitchen sink mentality: he throws in whatever he can, further raising the budget. For instance, American Crime Story's first season cost an insane $6.5 million per episode. The expenses covered some period-specific elements during the OJ trial. Yet most of it went to the paychecks of actors such as Cuba Gooding Jr. and John Travolta!
