If you find it hard to fall asleep at night, you may find that a daily banana might help you sleep better. Our diets play an integral part in our sleep health, according to the National Sleep Foundation, with certain foods helping or inhibiting our shut-eye quality. For a number of reasons, bananas are beneficial to sleep.
As a registered dietitian in New York City and author of The Small Change Diet, Keri Gans explained in a Health article that bananas are beneficial for sleep since they contain magnesium and potassium, both of which help us relax and fall asleep at the end of the day. Bananas are also high in carbohydrates, which can make you feel sleepier after eating them.
A banana also has an ace up their sleeve when it comes to inducing sleep: tryptophan. According to WebMD, tryptophan is an amino acid that helps produce melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep. In addition to providing good tryptophan in the diet, bananas have positive effects on mood and mental health as well.
